SUBJECT

Title

Receive a briefing and presentation from staff regarding the Hurricane relief efforts made by the Wastewater, Streets, Drainage, Fleet Services, Parks, Electric, Police and Fire departments in wake of Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey.

Body

BACKGROUND

Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Rockport, Texas as a Category 4 hurricane on August 25, 2017.  In the following days, Harvey degraded to a tropical storm as it stalled near the coastline of the state, dropping torrential and unprecedented amounts of rainfall over the Lone Star state. Just two weeks later on September 10, 2017, Hurricane Irma made landfall in Florida, also as a Category 4 hurricane, causing widespread damage and flooding. Utility departments from the City of Denton were requested to help in the disaster relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.  Employees volunteered to assist from the Wastewater, Streets, Drainage, Fleet Services, Parks, Electric, Police, and Fire Departments. The attached presentation and pictures will be used to give the Public Utilities Board an overview of the collaborative efforts to rescue victims, restore power, water and public roads in the days following the two natural disasters.
